Emma started eating NuGo Dark last year when her gluten-free dad found them at his college bookstore. Now her family eats 15-20 NuGo bars per week, plus many more when she is competing in an archery tournament. NuGo Dark Chocolate Pretzel is her favorite flavor.
Recurve Emma, as she is known in the archery world, first began archery when she was eight-years-old with a compound bow and switched to a recurve bow when she was 11-years-old. Now, at the age of 14, she is looking forward to competing in the Olympic trials this year and dreams of being on the US Olympic Archery Team. Emma said, “The great thing about archery is you can compete at any age, there are no restrictions!”
As an archer, she trains year round and still manages to be an A+ student. She does cardio and strength training workouts at the gym and enjoys running. Emma varies her training between workouts, distance shooting and blank bale shooting. Her focus this year is on increasing her overall strength and stamina. Emma loves having her step-dad as her coach, who introduced her to archery. “He is my coach because he taught me everything I know and he is always trying to learn everything new he can to help me,” she said.
Emma’s training to keep and build lean muscle requires eating a lot of protein. She likes eating NuGo Dark with her school lunch or as an after school snack. “Because a tournament round can be easily four hours, I am not comfortable if I eat heavy food or hot food, so NuGo bars allow me to get the protein I need immediately without making me miserable,” said Emma. She combines them with fruit, cheese, and hydration.
This impressive teen shared some good advice for athletes of all-ages. “Make sure that you are remembering to take in enough of a balance when training and competing. Protein is important but don’t forget the electrolytes – Hydrate!” Emma would like to shoot archery on a college team while majoring in Sports Psychology and Neuroscience. Her career goal is to become a mental coach for athletes. Read Emma’s blog, and follow her on Twitter and Instagram.
