When obstacle course racer Brian Ramey was a kid, he traveled all over the USA competing in rodeos in the bull riding event. As an adult he was looking for a new adrenaline challenge and found the Spartan Race, where people run a trail race with different levels ranging from 5 miles to 26 miles with military grade obstacles. After finishing the Spartan Race, he was hooked on the mental and physical challenge of obstacle course racing. In obstacle course racing, you have to make sure you have enough energy and cross-training to complete the obstacle or face a time penalty or a penalty of doing 30 burpees.
In 2015, Brian qualified for the Obstacle Course Racing World Championships, where he raced against the best from 15 countries from around the world. “It was absolutely amazing to get an opportunity to meet so many amazing people and compete on some of the top obstacles,” said Brian. The course was 9.5 miles long and approximately 3,000 feet elevation gain with over 50 obstacles, including natural ones, steep climbs, and river crossings with 22 degree temps. Brian explained, “That was the coldest I have ever been and numerous athletes were forced to dropout due to hypothermia.”
Also in 2015, he completed the strict Spartan Race Ultra Beast, which was 28 miles and 100 obstacles in the mountains of Killington Vermont. In August 2016, Brian will be running the Pikes Peak Ascent, which is 13.32 miles and 7,815 feet elevation gain up the mountain. He also plans to qualify again for the Obstacle Course Racing World Championships, which will be held in October at Blue Mountain Ski Resort in Ontario, Canada.
After a run or hard work, Brian loves to eat NuGo Stronger due to the high protein content and delicious taste. During his shifts as a police officer, he eats NuGo Family Vanilla Yogurt. “Being able to have a healthy snack at work such as a Vanilla Yogurt bar instead of a candy bar or something else that is unhealthy is very valuable,” explained Brian.
He has been a police officer for 9 years in Indianapolis, and maintaining a level of fitness is needed for him to perform his duties as a patrolman. “My type of work depends on me to try and be healthy every minute of every shift, and if I don’t consume proper food as fuel I’m only as good as what I fuel my body with. Food is fuel!”
Brian enjoys hiking in the mountain, visiting Colorado every chance he gets, and traveling to new places. He also enjoys camping, mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, and cooking.
