Women’s Health Week: Four Steps to Staying Healthy

Women’s Health Week: Four Steps to Staying Healthy

Mother’s Day marks the beginning of National Women’s Health Week, followed on Monday, May 12th by National Women’s Check-up Day. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Office on Women’s Health, the goal of Women’s Health Week is to “empower women to make their health a priority.” After all, when you’re healthy, you’re free to focus on your work, family, and leisure activities. Here are a few simple habits that can help improve your general well-being:

1. Maintain a Healthy Diet – This one is near and dear to our hearts here at NuGo Nutrition. Getting the proper vitamins and nutrients is vitally important to staying healthy, especially as we age. The benefits of a healthy diet are numerous, and can include heart health, brain health, stronger bones and teeth, weight control, and extra energy.

2. Deep Breaths – Breathing is one of the most powerful de-stressers. When our bodies are under constant stress, we heavily compromise our immune system. To help alleviate the adverse effects and build your resistance to illness, take a few moments throughout the day to take a nice deep breath. Try your best to breathe in slowly through your nose, into your stomach, exhaling through your mouth.

3. Talk to Your Doctor – As we mentioned above, May 12th is National Women’s Check-up Day. Even if you feel great, it’s a good idea to get into the habit of visiting your doctor once a year for routine screenings and to answer any questions you may have about your health.

4. Physical Activity – This one is arguably the most powerful, especially if you have a job that involves a lot of sitting. Just 30-60 minutes a day of moderate exercise delivers a myriad of health benefits, and not just for your body. Michael Otto, PhD, a professor of psychology at Boston University says, “The link between exercise and mood is pretty strong. Usually within five minutes after moderate exercise you get a mood-enhancement effect,” (American Psychology Association).

Women’s Health Week is all about implementing realistic changes that will improve your life, so start small. This week could be the beginning of an even healthier and happier life for you and your family.
