So who said you need to deprive yourself to be healthy? We live in a world with overwhelming information on how to lose weight and keep healthy. We are given a list of foods to stay away from and told to count our calories…right?
Wrong!!! We need to take a step back in our fast-paced style of living and eating and bring it back to the basics! Let us take a journey through our time machine and relive the period of our Paleolithic days as hunters and gatherers. Our bodies have never changed so why should our food? We need fuel to focus, mental clarity, to sustain physical activity and to perform at our best. Technically we need food to LIVE (and I don’t know about you, but I enjoy it too.)
You know the time you feel the stomach grumbling at 9 am from skipping breakfast or the when you barked back at your co-worker because you were so hangry? It’s probably because you denied yourself the fuel.
Fuel comes in many shapes and forms. In the world of nutrition, we call these macro nutrients- Fats, Protein, and Carbohydrates. Now I don’t need you knowing the chemical properties of each, but it is important to know their function and role in metabolism.
Fats:
- Provide energy
- Maintain body core temperature and insulation
- Protects vital organs
- Keeps us full… no wonder every time you eat fat free products, you’re still hungry
- Regulates our metabolism
(Found in avocado, nuts, seeds, olives, cream)
Wait….. did we just say fat helps metabolism? Weren’t we told that fat actually makes us fat?
We must distinguish between dietary fats and body fat. Here we encourage you to eat healthy fats from nuts, seeds, and plant-based sources to help efficiently burn energy throughout the day. Simply put, you need fat to burn body fat, hence weight loss.
Protein:
- Comprised of amino acids the building blocks of muscle
- Assists with wound healing and tissue repair
- Involved synthesis of hair, skin and nails
- Regulates hormonal activity
- Takes longer to digest, hence…. Keeps us full
(Found in meat, poultry, fish, eggs, dairy products, nuts, seeds, legumes)
Carbohydrates:
Provides quick source of energy, especially in brain function
(Found in fruits, vegetables, beans, rice, grains, sweets)
Clearly all the nutrients above must work synergistically to keep us healthy and strong. Now, we are not always carrying fruits, meat and eggs in our gym bag, but…..
