10 Ways to Eat Real Food on a Budget

Fear not: With a game plan and some creativity, it’s totally doable and might be more affordable than you think. Here are 10 smart money-saving tips that prove eating cheap doesn’t equate to pre-packaged ramen noodles and PB & J sandwiches.

  1. Plan ahead and write it out: You can do it the old fashioned way with pen and paper or use your smartphone, but no matter how you do it, writing out a grocery list is one best ways to stick with a food budget. Plan meals for the week and then write a grocery list that includes only those ingredients and stick to it! Not only will planning help your family eat healthier and save money, it can also reduce food waste and stress.
  2. Check inventory in your fridge and pantry: Before you create your grocery list and start planning meals, do a quick inventory to see what you may already have on hand. It’s easy to forget that you have that can of beans or box of pasta.
  3. Stock up on beans and whole grains: Beans and whole grains such as quinoa and brown rice are inexpensive and easy to create meals with. Think vegetarian bean chili over brown rice or quinoa salad with black beans.
