Caroline Wallace of Holladay, UT is a vegan Trail Runner who has placed in the top 10 women in all of her races over the last year. Trail Running for her is very much about the connection between the mental and physical elements; finding ways to create balance and fuel each part while progressing to the next level. Caroline trains diligently and doesn’t settle for less than her best.
She placed 2nd in the women’s category at the Twisted Fork 64K this past June. Some of her future goals include being the first female finisher of the Barkley Marathons, UTMB, Western States, and Hardrock 100, set the FKT for women on the Long Trail in VT, and the list goes on! Caroline explained how she appreciates each step to reaching her goals.
“I still consider myself to be a rookie but I've grown to appreciate each step along the way, and for me that in and of itself is progress, and is what I consider to be my biggest achievement/accomplishment so far in running. Some days I feel frustrated because I want to be farther than where I am, but I remind myself that in order to get where I want to go, I have to build my base as strong as I possibly can.”
Her ultimate goal with trail running involves not only accomplishing a whole list of physical feats but also to find a way to help others reach a similar level of peace and joy as she experiences while out running.
She is a nature-enthusiast, spending as much time in nature as she possibly can. The forest is where she feels her best. “Using my mind, body and soul to connect with nature is an experience I find most frequently when out on a long-run or during a race, there is something about pushing myself to my physical and mental limit… and then breaking beyond those boundaries that has me coming back time and time again for more,” she said.
Caroline loves vegan NuGo Slim Chocolate Mint and Toasted Coconut. She also loves the NuGo Dark line with Dark Chocolate Pretzel and Dark Chocolate Coconut flavors being her favorite. Caroline is vegan and has lots of food allergies and sensitivities, plus she’s cautious about what ingredients she puts into her body.
“A huge part of trail running is fueling, and I am not your average bean when it comes to food. Luckily about 5 years ago, I discovered the vegan NuGo Slim bars, they’re my go-to for quick and convenient refueling before or after a run, and I eat one during some of my long adventures to help keep me moving!”
When she’s not running you can find Caroline hiking, camping, bird-watching, exploring new mountain towns, and skiing in the winter. You can follow her journey on Strava and Instagram.
